A seller tells you their reviews are “undetectable”. Real-looking accounts, posted slowly, nothing Google could trace. You’re tempted to buy Google reviews australia this way and want to know if the claim holds up.
It doesn’t. Google can detect many fake and paid reviews, both before they’re published and long after. Its system isn’t perfect and nobody outside Google knows every check it runs, but when a review is caught, the penalty lands on your profile and not on the seller.
We run review outreach for Australian businesses at BuyReviews, using real customers only. Here’s what Google has said publicly about how it catches fakes, and what that means for you.
Can Google detect fake or paid reviews?
Yes. Google says machines are its first line of defence because they’re good at spotting patterns, and that the vast majority of fake content is removed before anyone sees it.
The scale gives you an idea of how much effort goes into this. Google reported that it blocked or removed more than 170 million policy-violating reviews in 2023, over 45 per cent more than the year before.
How does Google detect fake reviews?
Google doesn’t publish its full method, and that’s deliberate. What it has shared comes down to three layers.
What does Google check before a review is published?
Every review goes through Google’s moderation systems before it appears. If those systems find no policy violation, the review can post within seconds.
So a review that shows up on your profile has passed the first check. That’s all it has passed.
Does Google keep checking after a review goes live?
It does, and this is where most “undetectable” claims fall over. Google says its systems keep analysing content after it’s published and watch for questionable patterns.
In 2023, Google launched a newer machine learning algorithm that looks at patterns over time. One example Google gave is checking if an account has previously posted reviews on other targeted businesses. Google says it catches both one-off cases and broader coordinated attacks.
In practice, a review that sat quietly for three months can still be removed in month four. We’ve seen owners relax too early.
Do people report fake reviews too?
Yes. Google says Maps users and businesses can report any review they believe breaks its policies, and trained human operators work alongside the machines.
Your competitors can report reviews on your profile. In our experience, they’re usually the first to notice when a rival’s count jumps overnight.
Can Google tell if a real customer was paid for a review?
This one is harder for Google, because a real customer who got a discount writes like any other customer. Harder doesn’t mean safe.
Google bans any reward in exchange for a review and treats it as fake engagement. It also acts on it. One restriction notice shared publicly in 2026 told a business that Google had found additional incentivised reviews on its profile.
Think about how an offer like that travels. It goes out by email, text or a sign on the counter, and any customer who receives it can pass it on to Google. We wouldn’t count on it staying private.
Does Google ever get it wrong?
Yes, in both directions. Some fake reviews slip through, and Google admits that its automated spam detection sometimes removes legitimate reviews by mistake.
That cuts against buying reviews, not for it. If real reviews can be removed in error, a profile full of fakes is in a much weaker spot. And if you lose an honest review, the fix is to keep asking real customers so new ones keep arriving.
What happens when Google detects fake reviews on your profile?
Google removes them, and it can restrict the profile. The listed restrictions are no new reviews for a set period, existing reviews unpublished for a set period, and a public warning that fake reviews were removed.
For Google reviews, Australia adds a legal layer too. The ACCC says fake online reviews breach the Australian Consumer Law.
How do you spot and report fake reviews on your own profile?
Sometimes the fakes are aimed at you. The ACCC has named a sudden spike of reviews in a short time as one telltale sign. Reviews that sound alike, or come from people you have no record of serving, are worth a closer look too.
- Open your Business Profile and select Read reviews.
- Next to the review, select the three dots, then Report review.
- Choose the reason that fits, such as spam.
- Check the result in Google’s Reviews Management Tool.
- If Google refuses and you have evidence, select Appeal eligible reviews in the same tool.
That’s the only route to remove fake Google reviews. If the review is real and simply unhappy, reply to it. When you respond to negative Google reviews, be brief, own any mistake, and offer a phone number.
How do you get more Google reviews that last?
Reviews from real customers have nothing to hide from Google’s checks. Here’s the routine we set up for clients.
- On a computer, sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile and search your business name.
- Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews, then Copy. This link comes from Google, so skip any third-party Google review link generator.
- Ask every customer on the day the job is done.
- Send the link by text, or use a short review request email template with a thank you and one line asking for an honest review.
- Offer nothing in return.
- Reply to each review within a day or two.
This is how we help clients get Google reviews at BuyReviews. You share your customer list, we do the asking and the reminders, and customers write what they think. For us, online reputation management in Australia means you improve Google reviews in a way that survives every check Google runs, now and later.
Frequently asked questions
Can Google detect fake reviews?
Yes, in many cases. Google says machines are its first line of defence and that most fake content is removed before anyone sees it. Its systems also keep checking reviews after they’re published, and people can report them. It isn’t perfect, but the risk of getting caught sits with your profile.
Can Google detect paid reviews from real customers?
Sometimes. A real customer who was given a discount writes like any other customer, so it’s harder to spot. Google still bans it and has restricted profiles over incentivised reviews. Offers made by email, text or signs leave a record, and any customer can report them. We wouldn’t rely on it staying hidden.
How many fake reviews does Google remove?
Google said it blocked or removed more than 170 million policy-violating reviews in 2023, which was over 45 per cent more than the year before. It credited a newer machine learning system that spots suspicious patterns faster. Google publishes these figures itself, so treat them as its own account of the numbers.
Why did Google remove my real reviews?
Google’s spam detection is automated, and Google admits it sometimes removes legitimate reviews by mistake. A review can also be removed if it breaks a content policy, even when the customer is real. You can’t restore a review yourself. Keep asking customers in the normal way so new reviews continue to arrive.
Can I report a competitor’s fake reviews?
Yes. Anyone using Google Maps can report a review they believe breaks Google’s policies, and Google decides whether to remove it. In Australia, the ACCC also accepts reports about fake or misleading online reviews. Report what you can back up, and don’t post fake negative reviews in return.
What should you do next?
Ignore any seller who says their reviews can’t be detected. Google checks reviews for as long as they’re live.
