Each puzzle is assigned a rating between 1 and 6, based on the average number of guesses that solvers required. A low rating indicates that most players solved the puzzle quickly, whereas a rating close to 6 indicates that a considerable share of players finished at the limit or failed to finish.
Classification bands
- Easy: below 3.7
- Medium: 3.7 to 4.4
- Medium+: 4.5 to 4.9
- Hard: 5.0 or higher
The guess distribution and the long-term baseline are taken from a single consistent set of results for each puzzle. A full distribution is published only once the results for that puzzle are complete; until then, the most recent complete distribution is shown and is clearly labelled with its puzzle number and date. Vowel counts, repeated letters and the first letter are derived directly from the answer, and the letter Y is not treated as a vowel.

What does a rating of Medium+ indicate?
It denotes a puzzle that required noticeably more guesses than a typical one, without reaching the level at which the Hard classification applies. In practice, the rating falls between 4.5 and 4.9.
Why is the guess distribution not from today's puzzle?
A distribution is only meaningful once enough results have been collected. Until the results for the current puzzle are complete, the most recent complete distribution is presented instead, with its puzzle number stated.
Can a familiar word still receive a Hard rating?
Yes. Difficulty depends on more than vocabulary. Repeated letters, common endings shared by many words, and unusual letter positions can all increase the number of guesses needed.
Does this page reveal the answer?
The answer is displayed in the summary and in the rankings. Readers who prefer to avoid it should use the hints page, in which clues are disclosed progressively.
How frequently is the report updated?
Once per puzzle day. Each update adds the new puzzle to the trend, the monthly ranking and, where relevant, the annual rankings.
